Fasting Tips

Drinking lots of water and staying hydrated during a fast is important.

Fasting can be beneficial to your mind, body and spirit but as with everything, moderation and balance is key. Here are a few tips to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe fasting experience:

While fasting:

  • Drink lots of water
  • eat fresh organic vegetables and fruits
  • limit your exposure to pesticides and artificial additives
  • For your first time, start light (meaning start with a moderate program like a one day regimen that includes one meal during the day)
  • Limit your exposure to television, phones, and other electronic distractions to facilitate a mind/body/spirit connection
  • Practice being quiet when you can (sitting in silence is a good practice)
  • Get as much sleep as possible
  • Other good practices: meditation, yoga, prayer

In addition:

  • Do not starve yourself (fasting for more than 4-5 days can be extreme depending on your fasting regimen and it can be harmful to your body)
  • Do not use nicotine, alcohol, caffeine
  • Do not eat red meat, poultry, sugar
  • Do not fast if you are underweight, unwell, or pregnant/nursing
  • Do not engage in strenuous activities
  • Do not binge eat after ending your fast (your stomach will shrink during fasting)
  • Do not fast if you are recovering from surgery, are prone to bulimia or anorexia, have chronic problems with any vital organs, bleeding ulcers, heart disease, cancer, diabetes

…and when in doubt always consult a physician.
