Essex Street Market: This historic staple is worth a trip to the Lower East side, here in New York City. It’s been around since the 1940’s and has maintained its traditional community feel. This market has a cultural atmosphere and all of the delights of gourmet dining/cooking. What can you find here: retail goods, juicy tomatoes, fragrant herbs and spices, tropical fruits and vegetables, and tons of interesting and rare products for all of your culinary needs. You can find many items here to spruce up your dull meals; whether you are vegetarian or not. Of course Essex house has its share of fine meat shops but you can pass those by, just as I did (if you are vegetarian).
If you are looking for fresh produce, friendly and knowledgeable service – then this is definitely the place for you. Tip: Some of the vendors speak only Spanish but, when in Rome…be patient and respectful – and the rewards will melt in your mouth.
