Herbs and Spices 101 – Onion & Garlic

Onions are available year round and they come in many colors, shapes, and flavors. The bulb of the onion grows underground and is used for energy storage. Above ground, only a single vertical shoot is seen.

Onion powder is a spice used for seasoning in cooking. It is made from finely ground dehydrated onions. This spice comes in the form of powder, flakes, and granules (a coarser choice of the powdered version).

Onion powder comes in a few varieties:

  • White onion powder
  • Red onion powder
  • Yellow onion powder
  • Toasted onion powder

Garlic is also available year round and comes in many varieties. This pungent herb is a perennial herb with a globe like bulb containing 5 – 15 cloves, covered by white or mauve-tinged skin. The plant has flat leaves and produces an umbel of green-white to pink flowers. Garlic has been used for medicinal purposes such as clearing bacterial infections, lowering fever, and reducing blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar levels.

Garlic powder is also a spice. It is made from finely ground dehydrated garlic cloves. This spice also comes in the form of powder, flakes, and granules (a coarser choice to the powdered version).

Whether you are crushing, chopping, mincing, or sautéing them, both Garlic and Onion can work great with most of your meals to enhance the natural flavor.
